Peak fruit harvest season continues in Xinjiang
In the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwestern China, local fruits are entering their peak harvest season. Improvements in cultivation, processing and marketing technologies are helping farmers increase their incomes, ECNS reports.
Xinmei harvest in Yengisar
In Yengisar County of Kashgar Prefecture, xinmei, a locally bred variety of European plum, has fully ripened. The area planted with this crop in the county totals about 3,133 hectares.
Standardized cultivation methods and a cold supply chain are expected to help preserve fruit quality during transportation to different regions of China. A local agricultural technology company has introduced standardized management and on-site expert consultations to support fruit quality and yields.

Since harvesting began on August 16, more than 1,000 residents of local villages have found seasonal work in the plum-growing industry.
Fig storage and sales
In the city of Atush, new processing and storage methods have made it possible to extend the shelf life of fresh figs to 10–15 days. Online and offline sales have opened access to markets in major Chinese cities.
Xinjiang ranks first in China in the cultivation area and production volumes of dates, grapes, apricots, fragrant pears, almonds and xinmei. According to the regional forestry and grassland authority, the area of fruit plantations in the region totals about 1.47 million hectares, or approximately 13% of the total area of such land in China.
