Ukrainian corn is losing ground in export markets
The Ukrainian corn market has seen a noticeable decline in purchase prices amid falling demand from certain importing countries. Last week, the price of grain on DAP-port terms fell to $217 per ton, and on FCA terms near the western border—to €193 per ton. This indicates increasing price pressure on Ukrainian agricultural exports.
The main reason for the drop was a sharp decline in activity from foreign buyers. Turkey set the key trend; while it remained one of the main importers of Ukrainian grain at the start of the week, it subsequently suspended purchases almost entirely.
What is putting pressure on Ukrainian corn prices:
- Competition from Latin America: A significant volume of cheaper Latin American corn has appeared on the global market.
- Pressure from domestic supply: Ukrainian farmers have stepped up the sale of old crop carryover stocks.
- Traders’ strategy: Owners of large grain stocks have been trying to accelerate the sale of their existing volumes.
- Global balance: Overall corn supply on the global market remains high at present, limiting the potential for growth.
A harsh domestic measure by the Turkish authorities dealt an additional blow to the market at the end of the week. A large-scale antitrust investigation has begun in the country’s poultry meat production sector.
Currently, external supervisory administrators have been appointed at 13 major companies in the industry, and proceedings have been initiated against a number of top managers on suspicion of price manipulation and violations of competition law.
Since poultry farming is the key consumer of feed corn in Turkey, the market viewed this scandal as a serious risk to future demand.
At the same time, another strategic buyer for Ukraine—Egypt—is currently favoring Latin American grain, which is winning the price competition against domestic products.
