Farmers in southwestern France are suffering from climate change
Farmers in southwestern France are experiencing significant psychological and economic impacts from climate change. Jean-Mathieu Téveno, a farmer from the French Basque Country, spoke about this in an interview with France 24.
Téveno is a member of the French farmers’ union Confédération Paysanne, as well as the international movement La Via Campesina. According to him, 2026 was a turning point, as climate disruptions became a direct reality for agriculture, the economy, and culture.

Téveno’s own farm was only partially affected: its production cycle ended earlier in the season. At the same time, the farmer says he sees every day the difficulties faced by vegetable growers, livestock farmers, and fruit growers in various regions of southwestern France.
