Usyk's promoter sparked curiosity with a statement about Klitschko
Alexander Krasyuk, a well-known Ukrainian promoter and CEO of K2 Promotions, caused a stir in the boxing community with a cryptic post on Instagram. He posted a photo of himself with legendary former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and Krasimir Ininski, president of the Bulgarian Boxing Federation, adding a brief caption: “Something big is coming.”
This post immediately sparked a wave of speculation about a possible grand comeback for the 50-year-old Klitschko Jr. to professional boxing. Previously, Vladimir had repeatedly emphasized that the only compelling motivation that could make him put on his boxing gloves again is the desire to break George Foreman’s historic record. The American legend became the oldest heavyweight world champion at age 45, so now Ukraine’s “Doctor Steel Hammer” has every chance of setting a completely new, unbeatable record in world boxing.
Adding to the intrigue is the fact that Vladimir Klitschko had previously categorically rejected the idea of a comeback as long as another Ukrainian—Oleksandr Usyk—remained the undisputed champion and holder of all the major belts, since Klitschko would not have taken the titles away from his compatriot. However, recent changes in the division and the revised status of some belts have once again opened a theoretical window of opportunity for the legend to make a spectacular final appearance.
Wladimir Klitschko remains one of the most dominant heavyweight champions in the history of world boxing. He ended his career in 2017, leaving behind impressive statistics:
69 professional bouts;
64 career wins (54 of them by knockout);
He held the world championship title for a total of 4,382 days (nearly 12 years), which is an absolute and still unbroken record for the heavyweight division;
Together with his brother Vitali Klitschko, he is enshrined in the Guinness World Records as the pair of champion brothers who have won the most title fights.
Klitschko’s last official fight took place on April 29, 2017, at Wembley Stadium in London, where, in a dramatic and spectacular bout, he lost by technical knockout in the 11th round to the young British prospect Anthony Joshua. Despite the long hiatus, Volodymyr continues to maintain fantastic physical condition, which has fans believing his return is a real possibility.
