The EU has extended sanctions against Russia over the illegal annexation of Crimea

The Council of the European Union on June 15 has decided to extend for another year the restrictive measures against Russia imposed in response to the illegal annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea and Sevastopol. The sanctions will remain in effect until June 23, 2027. The EU emphasized that the extension of the restrictions is a response to Russia’s ongoing occupation of Ukrainian territories.

The European Union stressed that it does not recognize and continues to condemn the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation as a gross violation of international law.

Sanctions against the occupied peninsula were first imposed in June 2014. They include a ban on the import into EU countries of goods originating from Crimea and Sevastopol, as well as restrictions on infrastructure and financial investments and the provision of tourism services in the temporarily occupied territory.

In addition, the European Union prohibits the export of certain goods and technologies to Crimean enterprises or for use on the peninsula. The restrictions apply, in particular, to the sectors of transport, telecommunications, energy, as well as the exploration and extraction of oil, gas, and mineral resources.

The extension of the sanctions confirms the EU’s unwavering position regarding the non-recognition of Russia’s attempt to legalize the occupation of Ukraine’s Crimea and Sevastopol.

This was reported by the press service of the Council of the EU.

Prior to this, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree imposing new sanctions against individuals and organizations linked to Russian propaganda and the persecution of Ukrainians. The restrictions apply to 29 individuals and 17 legal entities.
