NATO to hold BALTOPS exercises in the Baltic Sea – Reuters

This week, the United States, together with its NATO allies, will launch the annual BALTOPS naval exercises in the Baltic Sea. Although this year’s maneuvers will take place on a significantly reduced scale due to the heavy deployment of NATO warships in other global hotspots, they will still be the largest naval operations in the region for the entire year of 2026.

The large-scale exercises, led by the United States, will run from June 4 to 20. About 20 warships from 15 alliance member countries, as well as nearly 6,000 military personnel, are expected to participate—these figures represent roughly half the scale of last year’s similar exercises.

It is noteworthy that despite sharp public criticism of NATO by U.S. President Donald Trump and his stated plans to significantly reduce Washington’s defense commitments to its partners, the U.S. will still provide its powerful flagship, the USS Mount Whitney, for the exercises.

The BALTOPS program will begin with tactical exercises in the western waters of the Baltic Sea, after which the operational groups will move eastward. The military’s primary task will be to practice scenarios for uninterrupted logistical supply and the protection of free sea lanes around the strategically important Swedish island of Gotland. Ensuring the security of these maritime arteries is crucial for the defense of the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), which, in the event of a real military crisis, would depend on maritime supplies due to the presence of only one vulnerable land corridor connecting them to the rest of NATO’s mainland territory.

Alliance officials separately emphasize that the reduction in the number of forces involved reflects solely the harsh operational realities of the present, not a loss of interest in the Baltic region. Currently, a significant portion of the Western naval fleet is carrying out combat and patrol missions in other unstable regions of the world, specifically ensuring navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East and conducting missions in the Arctic. Although the exercises are not officially positioned as a direct response to the actions of a specific state, German Rear Admiral Stefan Geish emphasized that, given the ongoing confrontation with Russia, conducting such exercises under U.S. leadership sends a clear signal of the unity and strength of the entire alliance. The forces during BALTOPS will be commanded by a multinational naval headquarters in Rostock, Germany, established in 2024 specifically to coordinate operations in the event of a potential conflict.

This was reported by the international news agency Reuters.

In June 2025, large-scale NATO BALTOPS exercises took place in the Baltic Sea, involving ships from 17 countries. The Kremlin has already called them a provocation.

As a reminder, Norway and Ukraine recently began joint training for drone operators. The training is taking place in Trøndelag as part of Operation Gungne.
