Top AI researchers quit OpenAI, Google and Meta for new startup

More than 20 top AI researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta have left their positions to join a new startup, Periodic Labs. Among them are co-creators of ChatGPT and former leading scientists from the world’s biggest AI labs. The company has already raised over $300 million in funding to advance its technology.

Periodic Labs aims to build AI that can accelerate scientific discoveries in fields like physics, chemistry, and other natural sciences. Researchers plan to combine the analysis of scientific literature with physical experiments, using robots to run thousands of tests in laboratories.
The founders argue that today’s chatbots and language models fall short of real scientific breakthroughs. Their goal is to create intelligent systems capable of experimenting independently, identifying new patterns, and discovering materials or medicines. The startup positions itself as an alternative to Silicon Valley’s “lazy” approach.
