Putin must not be allowed to succeed in the war – Irish Prime Minister

Russian dictator Putin must not be allowed to succeed in the war against Ukraine, as this would contradict the principles of international law that Ireland consistently upholds.

This was stated by Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin at a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Dublin, according to Ukrinform.

The head of the Irish government stressed that Russia's brutal and illegal war against Ukraine has caused destruction, and Putin has ‘demonstrated complete disregard for the value of human life and the norms of international law.’

‘Even as peace efforts are underway to end the war, he is trying to gain leverage at the negotiating table by intensifying Russian attacks on the front lines, Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. He must not be allowed to succeed,’ Martin stressed.

He added that Ireland, like all small countries, relies on the rule of international law. The Prime Minister noted that the principles of the UN Charter, the sovereign equality of all states and the non-use of force against territorial integrity are fundamental, and ‘Ukraine has the right to live in peace and freedom.’

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said his country is ready to participate in monitoring the ceasefire in Ukraine after a peace agreement with Russia is reached.

Ukraine and Ireland have signed a roadmap to strengthen cooperation.
