Sweden will revoke residence permits due to misconduct
The Swedish Parliament has passed new, stricter immigration rules that allow for the revocation of foreign nationals’ residence permits due to improper conduct, including undeclared work, tax evasion, debts, or ties to extremists.
The new measures will apply both to future applications and retroactively to the documents of individuals already residing in the country.
In a separate provision, adopted by a narrow majority, lawmakers required employees of several government agencies (the tax service, employment agencies, and social security) to notify the police when they identify individuals without legal grounds to remain in the country. Following a wave of criticism, medical professionals, teachers, and social workers were exempted from this obligation; however, human rights advocates from Amnesty International and Civil Rights Defenders still claim that this constitutes a serious violation of legal certainty. Sweden’s center-right government took these steps ahead of the September parliamentary elections to secure support from the far-right Sweden Democrats party.
