The United States plans to significantly expand its military presence in Greenland

The United States is negotiating with Denmark to gain access to three strategic bases in Greenland.

According to The New York Times, General Gregory Guillaud, commander of U.S. Northern Command, confirmed plans to expand access to facilities on the island given the region’s growing strategic importance. In particular, U.S. military planners are considering the possibility of using the deep-water port in Narsarsuaq and the airfield in Kangerlussuaq, which previously served as U.S. bases during World War II and the Cold War.

The implementation of these plans is based on the 1951 defense pact, which allows the U.S. to expand its military presence after consulting with the authorities of Denmark and Greenland. Although much of the old infrastructure was dismantled after the withdrawal of American forces in the 1950s and 1990s, the existing airports at these sites retain the capacity to accommodate large aircraft. The Pentagon is keeping the details of the expansion under wraps, but it is known that the bases are needed to host special operations forces and naval units.

Experts note that the increased U.S. activity in Greenland is a response to Russia’s militarization of the Arctic and Donald Trump’s attempts to interfere with the island’s status. Despite Trump’s previous threats of a military takeover of the territory, Washington is currently utilizing the diplomatic and legal mechanisms of existing agreements. The Danish government is invoking the defense pact to counter aggressive rhetoric while simultaneously processing the Pentagon’s requests for facility modernization. The number of military personnel planned to be deployed to the island is currently not being disclosed for national security reasons.

Denmark was preparing for war with the U.S.: blood was being delivered to Greenland and plans were made to blow up the airport runway.

We also reported that the US has authorized operations involving Russian oil on sanctioned tankers.

The Social Democrats are leading in Denmark’s snap elections.
