The United States tested a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile
U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command The U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command announced the successful test launch of the LGM-30 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. The test launch confirmed the system’s operational capability and readiness for service.
According to the AFGSC website, the launch of the unarmed missile took place on May 20 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
It is noted that the test was planned “many years ago and is not a reaction to global events.”
“Our ability to conduct these rigorous and realistic tests is the foundation of our national security,” said AFGSC Commander General Lex Scott Daviss.
According to him, the launch confirmed the readiness of U.S. intercontinental ballistic missile forces and the operational status of all system components.
During the test, specialists tracked the missile’s flight path to evaluate the performance of the engines, guidance systems, and re-entry system under extreme stress conditions.
The Air Force also noted that the U.S. is in the process of replacing Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles with the new LGM-35A Sentinel system. Until this process is complete, the Minuteman III will remain on combat duty.
