August 6, 2026: What Is Being Celebrated Today in Ukraine and Around the World
On Wednesday, August 6, believers celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ—one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Christian calendar. In folk tradition, this day is also known as Apple Savior, when believers have apples, grapes, and other fruits of the new harvest blessed in churches.
According to the Gospel, it was on this very day that Jesus Christ was transfigured before the apostles Peter, James, and John on Mount Tabor. The feast symbolizes the manifestation of Christ’s divine glory, spiritual renewal, the strengthening of faith, and hope for salvation.
Also, on August 6, Ukraine celebrates Agricultural Workers’ Appreciation Day. On this day, gratitude is expressed to agrarians, farmers, machinery operators, livestock breeders, gardeners, and everyone who, through their labor, provides the country with food and contributes to the development of the agricultural sector.
In addition, August 6 marks the International Day Against Nuclear Weapons (Hiroshima Day) worldwide. It was on this day in 1945 that an American bomber dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of people. Three days later, the city of Nagasaki suffered a similar attack.
Another significant date is the International Day of “Doctors of the World for Peace.” It was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima to remind people of the humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons and to call for the preservation of peace. Medical professionals emphasize that in the event of a nuclear war, no healthcare system would be able to provide assistance to all those affected.
