Moldova has left open the possibility of unification with Romania should its EU accession fail — Euractiv

Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Eugen Osmoceanu stated that the country might consider unification with Romania if the process of joining the European Union is blocked or significantly slowed down after 2028.

According to him, such a scenario could be considered a “Plan B” if the path toward European integration does not yield the expected results.

At the same time, Osmoceanu emphasized that the Moldovan government’s main goal remains signing an EU accession agreement by the end of 2028 and successfully advancing the negotiation process.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Chisinau continues to work on opening negotiation chapters regarding EU membership and adapting legislation to European standards.

He also drew attention to external pressure on Moldova, particularly hybrid actions by Russia, which, according to the official, are aimed at undermining support for European integration within the country.

Osmocheascu added that among the alternative integration options, interim formats of cooperation with the European Union are being considered, which allow candidate countries to become more deeply involved in the work of European institutions.

Commenting on the possibility of unification with Romania, he noted the close historical and cultural ties between the two countries, as well as the significant number of Moldovan citizens who hold Romanian citizenship. At the same time, the official emphasized that this scenario remains purely hypothetical at this stage.

Earlier, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU is not a “concession” on Europe’s part, but a strategic choice for the security of the entire continent. She emphasized that both countries have already proven their right to be part of the European Union by choosing the European path under difficult conditions.

The European Union has moved to the practical stage of preparing Montenegro’s accession treaty. The country continues on its path toward EU integration and has declared its intention to become a member by 2028.

Ukraine hopes that the European Union will open all six negotiation chapters on the country’s accession this year and anticipates the possibility of closing at least one of them by the end of the year.
