Major General Valery Plokhotnyuk was killed in an explosion at the Balzi Rossi restaurant in Moscow
On August 5, Major General Valery Plokhotnyuk was buried at the Troekurivsky Cemetery in Moscow. The Russian military officer was killed on August 1 in an explosion at the Balzi Rossi restaurant.
Russian propaganda Telegram channels had previously reported on Valery Plokhotnyuk’s funeral.
According to their reports, the explosive device detonated just as a car with flashing lights pulled up to the restaurant’s terrace. It is likely that Plokhotnyuk arrived at the restaurant at that very moment.
The circumstances of the explosion and the possible motives behind the attack remain under investigation.
Valery Plokhotnyuk held the rank of major general in the Russian Armed Forces. In 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded him this rank.
At that time, Plokhotnyuk held the position of chief of staff of the 49th Combined Arms Army of the Russian Armed Forces.
Previously, the general had also been associated with the Russian military presence in Moldova. In 2011, he was appointed commander of the Russian military task force in Transnistria.
Thus, Plokhotnyuk was among the high-ranking Russian military officers, and his death in the Moscow explosion has become one of the most high-profile events of recent days.
The publication “Mediazona,” using data from state registries, confirmed Plokhotnyuk’s date of death as August 1.
As a reminder, the explosion at the Balzi Rossi restaurant occurred on August 1 during a closed private event, which was presumably held to mark the 55th birthday of Russian Air Force Commander Alexander Chaika. Earlier, Russian media and Telegram channels had speculated that he might have been the intended target of the attack.

Maria Chaika—the daughter of Alexander Chaika, an army general of the aggressor state, the Russian Federation—may have been injured in the explosion at the Balzi Rossi restaurant in central Moscow. This was reported by the Russian publication “Verstka,” citing a source close to the restaurant’s management.
