More than 13,000 people are being evacuated in Germany due to a 250-kilogram bomb from World War II
About 13,600 residents of the city of Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany are to evacuate their homes on Tuesday due to the discovery of a U.S. World War II-era aerial bomb.
The dangerous munition was discovered during work at a naval arsenal.
It is a 250-kilogram American bomb that remained unexploded and is equipped with two detonators.
To safely defuse it, authorities have established an evacuation zone with a radius of one kilometer.
According to police, the evacuation of residents will begin at 8:00 a.m. local time.
By 11:00 a.m., the area must be completely cleared of people. The restrictions will apply, in particular, to the Südstadt district, the city center, and the Heppens district.
For residents who are unable to temporarily relocate elsewhere, three sports halls have been prepared as emergency shelters.
At the same time, bus service will be suspended starting at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
Due to the bomb disposal operation, two schools and five kindergartens in the evacuation zone will remain closed on Tuesday morning.
The city’s crisis response team will coordinate efforts with emergency services and the municipal public transportation operator.
Special attention will be given to nursing homes and medical care facilities located in the evacuation zone. Experts will assess whether it is necessary to evacuate their residents.
Consequently, following the discovery of the old munition, the authorities in Wilhelmshaven are conducting a large-scale evacuation of more than 13,000 people to ensure safety during the bomb’s disposal.
