There are calls in Russia to temporarily ban foreign films during the May holidays
Russia has introduced a temporary restriction on the screening of foreign films in movie theaters during the May holidays in 2026. The measure prohibits the screening of films that do not have an official rights holder or a distribution certificate.
The Association of Cinema Owners has proposed refraining from screening such films during the period from April 30 to May 11, 2026.
In effect, the restrictions could apply to films currently being shown as pre-show screenings without legal status in the Russian Federation.
The initiative was supported by the film company “Atmosfera Kino.” It sent a memorandum to Russian movie theaters regarding the release of the film “Lithuanian” and called for support of the Russian project about a Soviet female pilot, urging a boycott of new illegal releases of foreign origin.
In the Russian capital, concerns are growing regarding the safety of the May 9 parade. Despite official statements from the Kremlin that preparations are proceeding “according to plan,” reports are circulating in military circles and among bloggers about the cancellation of rehearsals and possible restrictions on the event due to the risk of drone attacks.
As a reminder, last year Russia completely canceled the Navy Day parade for the first time, which was scheduled to take place on July 27, 2025. This occurred against the backdrop of an attack by Ukrainian drones.
