Hungary has accused Ukraine of attacking the Turkish Stream pipeline and imposing an energy blockade

Hungary has accused Ukraine of attacking the Turkish Stream pipeline and imposing an energy blockade

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó claimed that Ukraine allegedly organized a massive attack involving 22 drones on a compressor station of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline in order to halt gas supplies to the country.

This was reported in a statement by Hungarian government spokesperson Zoltán Kovács.

According to the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, these actions are an attempt by Kyiv to impose a total energy blockade on the country. Szijjártó emphasized that the station is critical for Hungary’s stable gas supply and called for an immediate end to such acts of aggression.

The Hungarian side claims that Ukraine is already keeping Budapest under an oil blockade and is now attempting to cut off natural gas supplies as well. The minister noted that the Ukrainian authorities have crossed all lines, despite the fact that Hungary remains one of the main suppliers of electricity and gas for Ukraine’s needs. Hungarian government spokesperson Zoltán Kovács confirmed that these accusations have been officially voiced at the international level.

The situation is escalating amid a long-standing dispute over the transit of energy resources from Russia through Ukrainian territory. Hungary consistently defends its right to receive Russian gas and oil, citing its own energy security. The allegations of an attack on the Turkish Stream infrastructure have marked a new phase of tension between Kyiv and Budapest, directly affecting diplomatic relations within the EU and NATO.

Hungary blocked the final approval of a €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine due to objections regarding one of the agenda items. It concerned amendments to the regulations of the EU’s multiannual financial framework for 2021–2027.

Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, confirmed that Budapest had blocked the €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine.
