Vucic congratulated the pro-Russian Radev on his victory in the Bulgarian elections
Without waiting for the final vote count in Bulgaria’s parliamentary elections, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić congratulated former Bulgarian President Rumen Radev on his party’s victory in the parliamentary elections during a phone call. He expressed hope for the development of cooperation between the governments of Belgrade and Sofia.
This was reported by the Associated Press.
The “Progressive Bulgaria” party of former Bulgarian President Rumen Radev is leading in the country’s parliamentary elections with 37.5% of the vote, according to exit poll data from Alpha Research.
“I congratulated Radev on his success in the elections and his victory in Bulgaria. I am confident that these results will provide an opportunity to strengthen stability and progress, as well as to develop cooperation between Serbia and Bulgaria in the spirit of good-neighborly relations and shared interests. Serbia remains committed to establishing partnerships and regional stability,” Vucic wrote on social media.
On Sunday, April 20, parliamentary elections were held in Bulgaria. As previously reported by Bulgarian National Television (BNT), former President Rumen Radev enjoys a high level of personal trust among citizens; he stepped down from office to personally participate in the elections and joined the “Progressive Bulgaria” electoral bloc. Public opinion polls predicted a landslide victory for him.
As of Sunday evening, April 19, the Bulgarian Ministry of the Interior had already received 328 official reports of possible fraud during the National Assembly elections.
The parliamentary elections in Bulgaria on April 19 could lead to a shift in the country’s political course and a weakening of European unity regarding support for Ukraine.
Rumen Radev advocates for the restoration of close relations with Russia, opposes security agreements with Ukraine, and is skeptical about Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone.
