BMW has discontinued production of the 8 Series; a replacement is not expected anytime soon
BMW will wrap up production of the second-generation 8 Series by April 2026, and a quick replacement for the model is not expected at this time. According to Motor1, citing Automotive News, a BMW spokesperson stated that adapting the large coupe to the Neue Klasse architecture is technically impractical due to incompatibilities between electronic and software systems.
The G15-generation BMW 8 Series coupe debuted in 2018 on the CLAR platform. Later, the G14 convertible and the G16 Gran Coupe were added to the lineup. CLAR forms the basis for a significant portion of BMW’s current model range, but it was not designed for high-voltage electronics or the Neue Klasse software architecture.
According to Motor1, BMW considered handing over the role of flagship grand tourer to the revamped BMW Alpina brand but later abandoned that plan. At the same time, the company unveiled the Vision BMW Alpina concept, which was first shown at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May 2026 and later during Monterey Car Week.

The Vision BMW Alpina is a design study featuring an elongated coupe silhouette, a “shark nose” front end, and a V8 engine. The interior features leather, metal, and crystal. BMW has not disclosed the car’s dimensions and officially refers to it as a one-off concept rather than a confirmed production model.
As of January 1, 2026, BMW Alpina became a separate ultra-luxury brand within the BMW Group, and its cars are to be manufactured at BMW plants. Motor1 notes that the brand’s first production model under its new status could debut around 2027: the publication anticipates a sedan based on the 7 Series with a V8 engine.
