Horse unveiled a gasoline engine for fording water up to 1.1 meters deep — Motor1
Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Renault and Geely, has developed the 2.0-liter turbocharged B20 gasoline engine, designed to operate while fording water up to 1.1 meters deep. This was reported by Motor1. The unit is already used as part of the plug-in hybrid powertrain of the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700 SUV, intended exclusively for the Chinese market.
Water and off-road protection
The four-cylinder B20 has an IPX8 protection rating and can operate in water up to 1.1 meters deep. Horse Powertrain has sealed the engine's design and provided a separate seal between the engine and transmission. Electrical components and sensors are also designed for IPX8-level protection.
Sensors monitor conditions around the vehicle. If submersion is detected, the control system can automatically adjust power output and throttle response. According to Horse Powertrain, the engine can also deliver power steadily in challenging off-road conditions, including when climbing slopes with gradients of up to 100%.

For electrified powertrains
The B20 was developed from the outset for electrified powertrains. It can be used in conventional hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and range-extender electric vehicles. Depending on the configuration, the engine produces from 188 to 248 horsepower, while torque ranges from 300 to 380 Nm.
The unit weighs 130 kg. It has an aluminum block with an integrated exhaust manifold, direct fuel injection, a Miller cycle, and a variable-displacement oil pump. A fully active dual-circuit cooling system is provided for prolonged operation under high loads, including on steep slopes. Horse Powertrain states a brake thermal efficiency of 48.4%.
