Hyundai and LG Energy Solution test reuse of electric vehicle batteries
In Hwaseong, South Korea, Hyundai Motor Group, together with LG Energy Solution, Hyundai Engineering and Wonik PNE, has launched a pilot project for an energy storage system for fast-charging stations that uses batteries from retired electric vehicles. As reported by The Korea Herald, Hyundai Motor and Kia are also participating in the project.
A 200-kilowatt-hour system
A demonstration facility at Wonik PNE’s plant in Gyeonggi Province has been equipped with a 200-kilowatt-hour UBESS energy storage system. It was assembled from battery packs removed from Hyundai Motor Group electric vehicles built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform.
The system stores electricity during lower-tariff hours and supplies it to fast chargers during periods of peak demand. Hyundai Motor Group called the project the first in Korea to directly link used Hyundai and Kia electric vehicle batteries with fast-charging infrastructure.

Safety and efficiency testing
Hyundai Motor and Kia will be responsible for the system’s technical verification and the development of potential business models. LG Energy Solution will manufacture the UBESS from battery packs removed from electric vehicles and assess its performance and safety using its own battery diagnostics and management technologies.
Hyundai Engineering will examine the system’s commercial viability and its integration with charging infrastructure. Wonik PNE will provide equipment operation and technical testing. The partners will test charging and discharging control algorithms, the system’s safety and reliability, battery performance, and the quality of charging services under real operating conditions.
