The hydrogen-powered JCB Hydromax set an SCTA class record at Bonneville
The JCB Hydromax hydrogen streamliner set a Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) class record on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The car’s average speed over two runs was 368.347 miles per hour, according to Motor1.
The Hydromax competes in the Blown Gas Streamliner AA/BGS class for vehicles with engines exceeding 500 cubic inches in displacement. Under Speed Week rules, the official result is determined by the average of the top speeds from two runs conducted on consecutive days on the same track.
In the first run, the Hydromax clocked 367.141 miles per hour, and in the second, 369.554 miles per hour. The average speed of 368.347 miles per hour surpassed the previous class record of 348.342 miles per hour, set by the Spectre streamliner in 2010.

According to JCB, the team completed 44 runs at Bonneville during development and testing. The car is equipped with two JCB internal combustion engines, based on production models and adapted to run on hydrogen. Their combined power output was tuned to approximately 1,600 horsepower.
In the Hydromax, hydrogen is burned directly in modified combustion chambers. The car does not use fuel cells or batteries to power the wheels. Following the SCTA record, JCB and its partners are preparing the streamliner to attempt to set a land speed record under the rules of the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
