Auchan is closing its hypermarket in Kyiv after 16 years in business

One of Auchan Ukraine’s hypermarkets at 4 Velyka Kiltseva Street in Kyiv is closing following the expiration of a long-term lease agreement. The company was unable to reach an agreement on new terms with the landlord, despite lengthy negotiations. Employees have been offered positions at other stores in the chain. This was reported by the Retailers Association of Ukraine (RAU).

The Auchan Ukraine chain is closing its hypermarket at 4 Velyka Kiltseva Street in Kyiv, where the store has operated for 16 years, and the reason is quite straightforward—the long-term lease agreement has expired, and the parties were unable to renew it under new terms.

According to the Retailers Association of Ukraine, the contract had been extended several times in the past, but this time, despite lengthy negotiations between the company and the landlord, an agreement on further cooperation could not be reached. “On May 20, the 16-year lease agreement for the Auchan store at 4 Velyka Kiltseva Street expired,” the RAU noted, citing the retailer.

The company itself emphasizes that the closure of a single retail outlet does not mean a reduction in the network as a whole, as all employees have been offered transfers to other “Auchan Ukraine” stores, where jobs and internal staff employment have been preserved.

As of now, the chain operates 28 stores in Ukraine, including hypermarkets, supermarkets, and compact Ultra Proxy formats, allowing the company to maintain its market presence despite the closure of individual locations.

The company also notes that operating under wartime conditions has significantly impacted business processes: in 2025, air raid alerts resulted in approximately 4,000 hours of downtime, complicating the stable operation of retail locations and lease negotiations with partners. “Not all business partners agree with our decision to close during air raid alerts, which is why we are currently engaged in difficult negotiations regarding the continuation of cooperation at certain locations,” noted Marta Trush, CEO of Auchan Ukraine.

Despite the closure of a specific hypermarket, the company continues to operate in Ukraine and is adapting its business model to the economic conditions and security challenges affecting the retail sector in the country.

A scandal has erupted in Kyiv surrounding Vladimir Bilyi, an obstetrician at the perinatal center, following an activist’s allegations about his past and behavior on social media. The allegations pertain to an old case involving driving under the influence and the posting of photos from a cemetery.
