Photo: Students at Kyiv National University staged a protest against Rector Bugrov
On Wednesday, April 1, a large-scale protest began near the main building of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
This was reported by a UP correspondent.
University students are demanding the resignation of Rector Volodymyr Bugrov amid a high-profile sexual scandal that has rocked the academic community.
The rally began around 12:00 p.m. in Taras Shevchenko Park, directly across from the famous “red building.”
The protest was officially initiated by the KNU Student Parliament on March 30, calling on students not to ignore the university administration’s violations of ethical standards.
The student government emphasized that, according to the law, every student has the right to support the protest and skip classes.
“The administration has no right to punish students for this,” the Student Parliament stated in its appeal, adding that all missed classes can be made up later.
Representatives of the National Police and the Dialogue Police are maintaining order at the scene.
The situation remains tense, but the protest is proceeding peacefully. Students are holding signs demanding a transparent investigation and adherence to ethical standards within the walls of the country’s leading university.
As a reminder, a racy video of a man resembling the rector of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv has appeared online.
It is worth noting that similar scandals have already arisen regarding Bugrov. For example, in February 2022, the rector of the country’s leading university, Volodymyr Bugrov, was also accused of sexual relationships with female students and young female staff members.
At the time, Bugrov denied the authenticity of the materials posted online. The rector called the recent events surrounding him “a commissioned information and psychological campaign conducted according to the methods of the Soviet KGB” and speculated on who might have orchestrated it and for what purpose.
On the other hand, it was not until March 4, 2026, that the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv found Rector Volodymyr Bugrov guilty of an administrative offense related to corruption, fining him for failing to declare a vehicle.
Meanwhile, journalists from “Slidstvo.Info” discovered that Volodymyr Bugrov, rector of Kyiv National University named after Shevchenko, had become the owner of an apartment in a luxury new-build in Kyiv, which he could not have afforded with the funds he had declared. The KNU rector registered a two-bedroom apartment with an area of 74.7 m² in his name in the newly built White Lines residential complex near Holosiivskyi Park. Currently, such apartments cost over $200,000.
