Klitschko showed the mayor of Vilnius a new square and bridge in Obolon
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, together with Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas and Inga Stanite, Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to Ukraine-Tolochkene, officially opened Vilnius Square and a new pedestrian bridge in the section of the park on Pryrichna Street in Obolon.
The new bridge spans the bay and is modeled after the famous King Mindaugas Bridge in Vilnius. This infrastructure and recreational project is the result of a successful partnership between the capitals of Ukraine and Lithuania.
To implement the project, the Vilnius City Council, with the assistance of the State Agency “Central Project Management Agency,” allocated 600,000 euros in 2026. During the development of the concept for the space’s renovation, three rounds of open public consultations were held with local residents. The creation of this green space is of great social importance, as during wartime such locations help people recover emotionally and maintain psychological resilience. After the official part of the event, the delegation took a walk through the new park and across Obolon Island to the famous “Wave” Bridge.
Vitali Klitschko expressed his deep gratitude to the sister city of Vilnius for its financial support and extensive assistance to Kyiv throughout the full-scale war. The mayor of Kyiv recalled that in 2023, the Lithuanian capital delivered a large shipment of humanitarian aid to Kyiv, which included 20 powerful generators, gas stoves with cylinders, batteries, chargers, flashlights, and thermal clothing, and also transferred 500,000 euros to the “Future Kyiv” charitable foundation. In addition, this year the Vilnius City Council allocated an additional 80,000 euros to purchase solar panels to ensure energy independence for the Kyiv Retirement Home for Labor Veterans.
Klitschko announced this on his official Telegram channel.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, together with Bernadette Castel-Hollingsworth, representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Ukraine, and Natalia Gurzhiy, chair of the board of the “Rokada” Charitable Foundation, Natalia Gurzhiy, opened the country’s first municipal facility in the capital dedicated to supporting and assisting internally displaced persons, refugees, and those seeking protection.
The owner of the Lukyanivsky Market in Kyiv, which was damaged during the Russian attack in May, has not yet made a decision regarding its full-scale reconstruction.
