Part of the Sirius shelter for homeless animals burned down in the Kyiv region
A fire broke out at the “Sirius” shelter for homeless animals in the Kyiv region. According to preliminary reports, a short circuit caused the enclosures, kitchen, and workshop to catch fire overnight. Dozens of dogs were rescued, but eight animals died.
The fire broke out at night. According to shelter organizers, the fire was caused by a short circuit. The fire spread rapidly across the premises, engulfing the kennels, the kitchen, and the workshop. The flames destroyed tools, equipment, and supplies of dog food used to feed the animals.
When the fire broke out, shelter staff opened the kennels to let the dogs out and give them a chance to escape. Of the 70 dogs that were released, eight died. “We opened the kennels to let the dogs out. Of the 70 dogs we managed to let out, eight died. Eight of our charges are no longer with us…,” said the shelter’s organizers.
The surviving animals are currently under severe stress. Some of the dogs scattered across the grounds. Some animals are still being searched for, while others need to be calmed down and returned to safe places.
Firefighters rescued a dog from a burning enclosure
During the fire, rescuers helped not only put out the flames but also pull animals from dangerous areas. One of the dogs had to be rescued from an enclosure that was already burning on one side. The animal was so frightened that it refused to come out. The firefighters managed to rescue it.
Now, Sirius staff are trying to restore the facility and salvage whatever survived the fire. The first priority is to restore the ability to prepare food for the dogs. The organizers are trying to repair at least a few stoves so they can cook porridge again. For now, the animals are being fed from stockpiles. However, there isn’t much left, so the shelter needs help right away.

The shelter’s social media accounts have also published bank details for donations. Right now, any help is crucial for “Sirius,” as the shelter must simultaneously care for animals that have experienced severe stress, locate those that have run away, and restore the conditions for housing the dogs.

Over the past 24 hours, Russian forces carried out 978 strikes on the Zaporizhzhia region. Three civilians were killed and four others were wounded as a result of the attacks.
The day before, Russian forces attacked the grounds of a hospital in central Kherson with a drone. Four female medical workers were injured; all suffered blast injuries and concussions.
On the night of July 19, Russian forces launched a ballistic missile strike on Kyiv. One person was killed and eight others were injured as a result of the attack. Damage and fires were reported in five districts of the capital.
Throughout the day on July 17, Russian forces carried out strikes on Kharkiv and 29 other settlements in the Kharkiv region. Two people were killed and 18 others were injured as a result of the shelling; among the injured were five children.
