The Alpaca bookstore in Kyiv was damaged again following a shelling
On the night of July 30, a Russian attack damaged the family-owned “Alpaca” bookstore in Kyiv for the second time in a month and a half. The shock wave shattered the windows and damaged the building’s facade, and because of the risk of the glass collapsing, employees were unable to open the store.
The family-run bookstore “Alpaca” in Kyiv was once again damaged by Russian shelling. On the night of July 30, a blast wave damaged the store, which is located near the Pochaina metro station. According to the publication “Chytomo,” the blast shattered the windows, damaged the facade, and broke the glass. In addition, dangerous debris from windows and structural elements remains hanging from the ceiling and could fall. That is why employees are currently unable to enter the building, and the bookstore is closed on July 30.
This is the second such incident in the past month and a half. On the night of June 15, the building was also damaged during a Russian attack. At that time, the blast wave shattered the windows, warped the frames, and partially collapsed the ceiling. Some of the damage from that shelling has still not been fully repaired. “Alpaca” is a family-run bookstore specializing in children’s, fiction, and educational literature. It collaborates with Ukrainian publishers, including the “Ranok” publishing corporation, and also carries out its own social projects.
Since the start of the full-scale war, the bookstore has become known for its ongoing campaign to collect Russian-language books for recycling. Visitors can bring in or mail such books and receive gift certificates or discounts on Ukrainian books in return. The team directs the proceeds from the sale of recycled paper to support the Ukrainian military.
Not only individual readers but also Ukrainian companies are joining this initiative by organizing corporate book drives. It is also known that the chain’s director is a war veteran and actively supports the military and volunteer projects. The bookstore’s team is currently assessing the extent of the damage and hopes to resume operations as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the State Emergency Service reported that one person was killed and two others were injured as a result of the nighttime Russian attack on Kyiv. Specifically, a fire broke out at the “Pochayna” market in the Obolon district, where one person was also injured. This was reported by Chytomo.
