Artemida, the cat who spent three days trapped under the rubble, has died in Kyiv
A cat named Artemida did not survive in the capital; she suffered severe injuries as a result of an enemy attack on the night of May 24 and spent three days trapped under the rubble of a destroyed building. Despite the efforts of veterinarians and volunteers, the exhausted animal’s body could not overcome the burns and injuries she sustained.
Representatives of the Kyiv Animal Rescue Group reported this on their social media accounts.
The animal was found on the fourth day after heavy shelling in an industrial area near the Lukyanivska metro station, when she managed to crawl out from under the rubble on her own. Rescuers named her after the ancient Greek goddess of the hunt as a symbol of her extraordinary will to live, after which she was urgently transported to a veterinary clinic in critical condition. Animal volunteers noted that the injured cat had become yet another civilian victim of the war unleashed by Russia.
The organization expressed its gratitude to all concerned citizens who quickly joined the fundraising effort for the injured animal’s treatment and medication. The volunteers officially pledged to direct all the charitable funds raised that were not used for Artemis toward the treatment of other injured animals that regularly arrive at rescue centers following Russian missile and drone strikes.
On the night of May 24, Russian forces carried out a massive combined attack on Kyiv, using ballistic missiles and strike drones. All districts of the capital came under fire.
Ukrainian Olga Shusta rescued her cat on the ninth day after a Russian kamikaze drone destroyed her home. The family searched for the animal for over a week and tried to dig it out from under the rubble of the bedroom, where the damage was most severe.
