A petition to rename the future Varshavska metro station has been filed in Kyiv

An online petition has been posted on the Kyiv City Council’s website proposing to rename the future “Varshavska” metro station in Vynohradar to “European Union Avenue.”

The initiative was published on June 22, and as of June 24, it had already gathered 99 signatures out of the 6,000 required for consideration by city authorities.

The petition’s author, Dmytro Revtiukh, explained that the renaming is being proposed as a “symbolic peaceful protest” against the decision to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Poland’s highest state award—the Order of the White Eagle.

According to the author of the petition, the new name should reflect Ukraine’s strategic course toward European integration and its aspiration to join the European Union.

The text of the petition states that the name “European Union Avenue”:

  • will emphasize Ukraine’s European development trajectory;
  • symbolize unity with EU countries;
  • align with the path toward full membership in the European Union.

At the same time, the author emphasizes that the initiative is not directed against the Polish people or Ukrainian-Polish relations.

Mutual respect must remain the foundation of partnership between nations,” the petition states.

For the Kyiv City Council to officially consider the petition, it must gather at least 6,000 signatures within the specified timeframe.

Currently, the future “Varshavska” metro station remains a provisional name and is part of the metro line being built toward the Vynogradar residential district.

The initiative has already sparked public debate regarding the advisability of changing the station’s name and the symbolic significance of such decisions in the context of Ukraine’s European integration.

This is evidenced by the corresponding petition.

Earlier, the Kyiv Metro updated its recommendations for people who use underground stations as shelters during air raid alerts. Passengers are asked to refrain from bringing camping tents and large inflatable mattresses, as they take up a lot of space and inconvenience others.

An online petition has been registered on the official website of the Kyiv City Council proposing a ban on setting up camping tents, inflatable beds, and large mattresses in metro stations during air raid alerts.

The Kyiv City State Administration has responded to the discussion among Kyiv residents regarding tents in the metro during air raid alerts.
