Kyiv to get new “Friendship Bridge” with support from Lithuania

A pedestrian bridge will be built in a park on Pryrichna Street in Kyiv’s Obolon district as part of a large-scale renovation of the park’s south-western area.

The Kyiv City State Administration reported.

The project will be fully funded by Lithuania, with financing provided by the Vilnius City Municipality and the Lithuanian Development Cooperation Fund. As a result, the construction will be carried out at no cost to the city budget.

The new bridge will be a replica of the King Mindaugas Bridge in Vilnius and has been given the name “Friendship Bridge”, highlighting support for the Ukrainian capital during the war.

The project concept has already been discussed with local residents during public consultations. The space is planned to be fully barrier-free and accessible to all residents.

Meanwhile, the Yevhen Paton Bridge in Kyiv, which has been in operation for 73 years, is currently classified as being in a fifth (unserviceable) condition.

The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, citing corresponding member and Director General of the Ukrainian Institute of Steel Structures Oleksandr Shymanovskyi, says the bridge can still be preserved and that accidents and irreversible consequences can be prevented—provided urgent action is taken.
