Ukrzaliznytsia has begun construction of an accessible platform at Kyiv Central Station

Ukrzaliznytsia JSC, with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, has begun renovating the second platform at the capital’s Central Station to create a barrier-free space.

This was reported by the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development in a Telegram post. The project involves raising the platform from 200 mm to 1,100 mm, which will allow passengers to board trains at door level without using stairs.

In addition to raising the platform level, the station plans to install an elevator and new escalators for convenient access to the second and third tracks. These upgrades are designed to assist people with limited mobility, those with strollers, and travelers with heavy luggage. Construction is scheduled to be completed in early 2027, provided funding remains stable, after which the phased renovation of other platforms will begin.

The relevant ministry notes that this step is a continuation of the program to improve the station’s accessibility, under which two new elevators were already installed in 2023. The infrastructure modernization is being carried out in accordance with modern standards of inclusivity, which is important given the ongoing aggression by the Russian Federation. The project is being implemented as part of a broader strategy to modernize Ukraine’s railway hubs.
