May 19: What holiday is it today? Traditions and taboos
May 19 marks several international observances around the world, including World Family Medicine Day and Notebook Day.
This day may also be accompanied by various themed events and initiatives related to medicine, education, and healthy daily habits. In the folk traditions of certain regions, May is considered a time for actively finishing spring fieldwork and preparing for summer.
Every year on May 19, the world celebrates World Family Medicine Day. The holiday was established by the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) in 2010 to highlight the important role of family doctors in the healthcare system.
Family medicine is the foundation of medical care, as family doctors are the first to diagnose illnesses, provide preventive care, and support patients throughout their lives. In Ukraine, this holiday has taken on special significance during the healthcare reform and amid the war, when medical professionals are working under extremely difficult conditions.
May 19 also marks an unofficial creative holiday—Notebook Day. It is dedicated to one of the most popular items for note-taking, planning, creativity, and preserving ideas.
Notebooks are used by writers, journalists, artists, students, and anyone who likes to record thoughts, plans, or important events. In the digital age, paper notebooks remain a symbol of creativity, inspiration, and personal organization.
May 19 on the church calendar is the day of remembrance of the holy martyr Patricius, Bishop of Prussia, and with him three presbyters; the martyr Parthenius of Zhovkva, of Rome; and the venerable John, Bishop of Gothia.
Saint Patricius lived in the 1st century and was a bishop in Bithynia. For preaching Christianity, he was arrested along with his three presbyters, Akakios, Menander, and Polienus. All three were beheaded around the year 100.
Saint Parthenius lived in the 3rd century and was from Armenia. Parthenius served in Rome at the palace of Emperor Decius. When the persecution of Christians began, the saint did not flee and chose to suffer martyrdom for his faith. The saint’s relics are kept in the city of Zhovkva in Galicia.
The Venerable John lived in the 8th century and came from the territory of modern-day Crimea. In 754, he was elected Bishop of Gothia. He participated in the Council of Nicaea, which restored the veneration of icons. The saint died in 790. His relics were brought to the Crimean monastery of Parfenit near Mount Ayudag.
According to folk observations, the weather on May 19 could indicate what the summer and harvest would be like:
- if there is heavy dew in the morning, the year promises a good cucumber harvest;
- heavy morning dew foretells clear and warm weather;
- if there is no dew—rain is coming soon;
- morning fog after dawn promises partly cloudy weather without precipitation;
- rain on this day foretells a dry June;
- When roosters crow loudly in the morning, expect bad weather;
- if bees, ants, and spiders are very active—the weather will be good;
- a strong scent of flowers is considered a sign of approaching rain;
- a clear and sunny day promises a warm summer and a good harvest;
- if birds are chirping loudly—good weather will set in in the coming days.
