The American film studio Warner Bros. has begun work on a reboot of the popular family adventure film *Free Willy*. The studio plans to bring the story of the friendship between a man and a killer whale back to the big screen in a fresh new format.
The Warner Bros. team has brought in Mary-Margaret Kunze (known for her work on *Miller’s Favorite* and *The Icebreaker*) and Jade Halli Bartlett (*Miller’s Favorite*, *Boroughs*) to write the screenplay for the new film.
Released in 1993, *Free Willy* tells the story of an orphaned boy who befriends an orca living in captivity.
The film became a global phenomenon, grossing $153.7 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $20 million.
It is noted that “Free Willy” spawned several sequels and an animated TV series. The film, which starred the orca Keiko, dispelled myths about orcas.
