Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee to star in Korean remake of “The Intern”
South Korean director Kim Do-young has made a remake of the 2015 Hollywood comedy “The Intern.” Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee play the leading roles in the film. The movie will be released in Korean theaters on September 16, Korea Herald reports.
The original film by director Nancy Meyers told the story of a retired widower who becomes a senior intern at a fashion startup. Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway played these characters in the Hollywood version.
Acting duo
Choi Min-sik will play the role of the retired intern, while Han So-hee will play the company’s CEO. At a press conference in Seoul, Choi said he was interested in the opportunity to reinterpret the story for a Korean audience. According to him, the remake can offer a new portrayal of interaction, contradictions and growing closeness between generations in a local context.

Han So-hee said she wanted to join the project as soon as she learned that Choi Min-sik was involved. The actress called working with him a rare opportunity.
Reinterpreting the original
Kim Do-young previously directed an adaptation of the novel “Kim Ji-young, Born 1982.” The director said it was not easy for the team to work on a remake of a popular film, so she focused on the actors’ strengths and took into account changes in the perception of social issues over the 10 years since the original was released.
According to the director, the characters in the Korean version will be more realistic and will have their own anxieties, strengths and vulnerabilities. Choi Min-sik also said he does not object to comparisons between the remake and the original film, leaving the assessment to viewers.
