DreamWorks is developing a standalone movie about Donkey from *Shrek*

Universal and DreamWorks have officially confirmed that they are working on a new film in the "Shrek" universe. This time, the main character will be Donkey—one of the franchise's most beloved characters. The film’s premiere is already scheduled for the summer of 2028.

The “Shrek” franchise continues to expand. Following the success of the Puss in Boots films, Universal and DreamWorks have announced the creation of yet another spin-off. The new story will be entirely dedicated to Donkey—Shrek’s charismatic and talkative sidekick, who has become one of the series’ iconic characters. As in previous installments, the main character will be voiced by American actor and comedian Eddie Murphy. His voice has been associated with Donkey for many years, and the actor himself has repeatedly said that he would be happy to return to this role.

According to Variety, the film is set to be released on June 30, 2028. So far, almost nothing has been revealed about the plot, but it is known that the film will have the working title “Donkey.”

Charlie Bean, who previously worked on *The Lego Ninjago Movie* and *The Lady and the Tramp*, will direct the new project. Matt Flynn will co-direct. At DreamWorks, he worked as a storyboard artist on the popular animated films “Robot Chicken,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” and “Bad Boys 2.”

So far, the creators haven’t revealed any details about the story, but the film is expected to delve deeper into Donkey’s life and that of his family. In previous installments of the franchise, this character has always been one of the most colorful and funny, though he hasn’t had his own story yet. The news has already sparked keen interest among “Shrek” fans. Many have long asked the studio to make a standalone film specifically about Donkey, as his jokes, emotions, and friendship with Shrek have long been an integral part of the franchise.

Thus, following the successful expansion of the “Shrek” universe, DreamWorks continues to focus on its most popular characters. If everything goes according to plan, as early as the summer of 2028, audiences will see a new story centered on one of the most charismatic characters in the animated series. Variety reports on this.
