Maloletka's photograph of the shelling of Kyiv won the World Press Photo 2026 award

A photograph by Ukrainian photographer Yevhen Maloletka, taken after the Russian shelling of Kyiv, won the regional round of the World Press Photo 2026 contest in the “Europe” category.

On April 9, the organizers announced the 42 winners of the regional stage.

The winning photograph captured the aftermath of a massive attack on the capital on April 24, 2025. The image shows a 65-year-old woman sitting near her home after the building across the street was destroyed.

At least 12 people were killed and about 90 others were injured in the strike that day. The Svyatoshynsky district of Kyiv suffered the most damage.

Among the winners in the European category is also a work by American photojournalist David Guttenfelder. His photograph shows a Ukrainian soldier preparing FPV drones for combat missions in the Kharkiv region.

World Press Photo is one of the most prestigious international competitions in photojournalism, founded in 1955 in Amsterdam. This year, the jury reviewed over 57,000 entries from photographers in 141 countries.

The winners of the main category, World Press Photo of the Year 2026, will be announced on April 23.

The documentary film “2,000 Meters to Andriivka” by Ukrainian director and Oscar winner Mstislav Chernov has become one of the top contenders for the prestigious 2026 Emmy Awards.

The Ukrainian opera GAIA-24 won the international Music Theatre Now competition.
