Gretzky's historic jersey sold for a record $2.8 million — ESPN
A jersey belonging to legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky sold at auction for $2.8 million, setting a new record for hockey memorabilia.
ESPN reports this.
The jersey in question is the No. 99 jersey that Gretzky wore during the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals while playing for the Edmonton Oilers. It was during that season that he won his fourth championship title with the team.
The auction was conducted by Goldin Auctions. The current price is more than double the previous record—in 2022, the same jersey sold for $1.4 million.
The 1987–88 season was Gretzky’s last with Edmonton. That year, he scored 149 points in the regular season and added another 43 in the playoffs.
Gretzky remains one of the greatest hockey players in history and holds numerous NHL records, including for goals scored and points.
