The Liberos' photo series on the war in Ukraine received an award from Getty Images
Ukrainian photographers Konstantin and Vlada Liberovi won the Getty Images international competition in the “Story of the Year” category for a series of photographs documenting Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. In addition, one of their photographs took third place in the Photo of the Year category.
The couple noted that they view this award not as a personal success, but as recognition of the importance of documenting the war.
“We don’t know how to rejoice in such awards the way we rejoice in other victories. Because behind each of these images lies someone’s pain, someone’s loss, someone’s life that will never be the same again. These photos aren’t about technical skill. They’re about what we’re all going through right now,” the Liberovs wrote.
The photographers emphasized that they consider it their mission to preserve evidence of the war for history and the international community.
“It is a great honor for us to be the ones documenting this era. We are the ones preserving it for history so that, in the future, no one in the world can say they didn’t know, didn’t see, or didn’t understand. That is why we work with Getty—so that our images make the front pages of global media,” they noted.
Konstantin and Vlada Liberov dedicated their award to the Ukrainian military and civilians they have encountered over the years of full-scale war, thanking them for their courage and resilience.

In her view, such photos are important for documenting war crimes and should show the world the real consequences of war.
