A millennia-old stone statue in the Zhytomyr region has been added to the Cultural Heritage Register
In the Zhytomyr region, a unique stone statue—which tourists discovered in the thickets along the banks of the Sluch River—has been added to the Register of Cultural Heritage Sites.
According to archaeologists, the artifact may date back to the Scythian period (1st millennium BCE) or the early Middle Ages (5th–9th centuries).
Such stone statues were typically erected on burial mounds, and in the forest-steppe zone, they may have served as landmarks near river crossings.
The monument was first discovered in 2022, but full-scale research did not begin until 2025, with the participation of archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Local History. The artifact has now been officially entered into the Register of Cultural Heritage Sites.
