Exhibition on the underwater heritage of the Red Sea concludes in Jeddah
A six-month exhibition, "Sunken Treasures: The Maritime Heritage of the Red Sea," has concluded at the Red Sea Museum in the historic part of Jeddah. The exhibition was dedicated to the centuries-old history of maritime trade, navigation and pilgrimage in the region.
History of maritime routes
The exhibition had been open since February 25 in the historic Bab Al-Bunt building. It highlighted the importance of the Red Sea as a major trade route connecting the Arabian Peninsula with the Mediterranean, Africa and Asia.
The exhibition was divided into four thematic zones. Visitors were shown underwater archaeological finds and materials on Saudi Arabia's work to protect and document submerged cultural sites, Asharq Al-Awsat reports, citing the Saudi Press Agency.

18th-century shipwreck
One of the central exhibits was the 18th-century "Umluj" shipwreck, discovered at a depth of 20 to 22 metres among coral reefs. Its recovered cargo included trade containers, clay vessels, coins, ceramics and everyday shipboard tools.
The exhibition also displayed antique navigation instruments and nautical charts. According to the source, these items illustrated active human contacts in regional waters.
Joint organization
The exhibition was organized in cooperation with the Heritage Commission and the Historic Jeddah Program. It was part of the summer cultural program and combined interactive activities for visitors with academic research to promote cultural tourism and spread knowledge about Saudi Arabia's underwater heritage.
