Jerusalem to host retrospective of Paul Newman films
The Jerusalem Cinematheque in Israel will hold the “Paul Newman: A Tribute” retrospective dedicated to American actor and director Paul Newman. Screenings will run from September 10 to October 3 and will include films featuring his acting work as well as movies he directed. As The Jerusalem Post reports, the program presents different stages of Newman’s career.
The selection includes Otto Preminger’s 1960 epic film “Exodus.” In it, Newman played Ari Ben Canaan, a Haganah commander who helps Jewish refugees reach the territory of the future state of Israel. The film was based on Leon Uris’s bestseller.
Newman’s famous roles
The program opens with Robert Wise’s 1956 biographical drama “Somebody Up There Likes Me” about boxer Rocky Graziano. This work became Newman’s first major breakthrough in cinema. The retrospective will also show Richard Brooks’s “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” in which the actor appeared alongside Elizabeth Taylor, Robert Rossen’s “The Hustler,” and Stuart Rosenberg’s “Cool Hand Luke.”

The retrospective also includes Martin Ritt’s “The Long, Hot Summer,” starring Newman, Joanne Woodward and Orson Welles. It was Newman and Woodward’s first film together. They married in 1958 and subsequently appeared together in ten films.
Directorial works and later films
The Cinematheque will screen three films directed by Newman and starring Joanne Woodward: his 1968 debut “Rachel, Rachel,” “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds,” and an adaptation of Tennessee Williams’s play “The Glass Menagerie,” starring Woodward and John Malkovich. For her role in “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds,” Woodward received the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actress.
The program also includes George Roy Hill’s “The Sting,” in which Newman appeared with Robert Redford, Martin Scorsese’s “The Color of Money” with Tom Cruise, the Coen brothers’ “The Hudsucker Proxy,” and Sam Mendes’s “Road to Perdition” with Tom Hanks. Newman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in “The Color of Money.”
