Three films announced in Ghana for the 70th anniversary of independence
In Ghana, Sparrow Studios and OldFilm Productions have announced three films for the 70th anniversary of the country’s independence, which will be marked on March 6, 2027. The project was presented on September 8, 2026, at the Labadi Beach Hotel, MyJoyOnline reports.
Premiere schedule
The collection, titled The 70 Slate: A Cinematic Celebration of Ghana at 70, includes three films. The Return of Makunse is expected to be released first in December 2026. Nkrumah’s Red, Gold and Green is scheduled for a cinema release in July 2027, followed in December 2027 by a contemporary remake of Bob Cole’s I Told You So, a classic 1970 film.
The Return of Makunse tells a story about migration, unfulfilled promises and the illusion of a better life in the diaspora. Nkrumah’s Red, Gold and Green recreates the final 24 hours before Ghana declared independence in March 1957. The new I Told You So is intended to modernize the original film.

According to MyJoyOnline, the projects aim to engage the diaspora and tourists, present Ghana as a creative leader of a new cinematic era in Africa, and entertain Ghanaians in the country and abroad during the anniversary events.
Project participants
The initiative is led by Shirley Frimpong-Manso, Peter Sedufia, Araba Praba and Ken Atto. The executive producers are Selassie Ibrahim and Dede Chancellor. The films feature, among others, Adjetey Anang, Joselyn Dumas, Fella Makafui, Kwame Dzokoto, Naa Ashorkor, Augustine Abbey, Lydia Forson and Andrew Adote-Tandoh.
The presentation was attended by the executive secretary of the National Film Authority, Kafui Danku-Pitcher, and Diaspora Affairs Director Kofi Okyere Darko. The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, was represented by her assistant, Dr. Richard Kumi Fio. Danku-Pitcher said she supported the project, including through facilitation, regulatory clarity, support for film classification and existing platforms to promote the works in Ghana and abroad.
