Exhibition featuring 390 kg of peanut butter concludes in Rotterdam

A two-month exhibition of a work made from 390 kilograms of peanut butter has concluded at the Boijmans van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The installation, dedicated to artist Wim T. Schippers, who died this year, drew 48,000 visitors, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.

Peanut butter on the museum floor

The peanut butter was applied to a hexagonal section of floor measuring 25 square metres. According to the artist’s instructions, it was to be spread as evenly as possible, without lumps.

During the exhibition, 48 visitors accidentally stepped onto the surface, and museum staff retrieved five phones from it. One incident in which someone licked the installation was also recorded. A museum representative told AFP that it was probably a small child.

The museum also received 80 complaints in writing or by phone.

The peanut butter will be sent for composting

After the exhibition closed, the museum considered transferring the used peanut butter to zoos, animal shelters or environmental initiatives. However, museum spokesperson René Timmermans said that after eight weeks on display, the institution could no longer guarantee its quality, hygiene or safety. The peanut butter will therefore be sent for composting.

More than 400 peanut butter sandwiches were served in the museum café during the exhibition. The most popular combination was peanut butter with Hagelslag chocolate sprinkles.
