Harry Langbeim’s illustrations for Agnon’s works to be shown in Tel Aviv, Israel — Jerusalem Post

A solo exhibition by artist Harry Langbeim featuring illustrations for the works of S.Y. Agnon will be held at the Global Art Gallery in Tel Aviv, Israel, from October 6 to November 6. The opening ceremony is scheduled for October 9. This was reported by the Jerusalem Post.

Langbeim was born in Zurich and studied under renowned illustrator and graphic artist Alex Diggelmann. In 1973, he arrived in Israel to pursue a doctorate in immunology at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot. After working in the scientific and biotechnology sectors, he held management positions at several companies and also taught biotechnology and entrepreneurship at Braude College in Karmiel and Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba.

Nearly 40 works inspired by Agnon

After retiring at the age of 67, Langbeim focused on a visual interpretation of Agnon’s prose. The artist said that in 2017 he visited Buchach, the writer’s native Galician town mentioned in his works. Since then, he has created nearly 40 paintings based on Agnon’s plots.

For his works, the artist uses pen and ink and watercolor. According to him, he illustrates only events and details that are directly described in the texts: he structures the plot in a spreadsheet and selects a sentence that can be depicted. The first exhibition in this series was held in August 2023 at Yad LaBanim in Rehovot, but its duration was shortened by the events of October 7, 2023.

The next project

Langbeim’s works have already been exhibited at the Jerusalem Theatre gallery. In January and February 2027, a new series by the artist—paintings based on the stories of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov—is expected to be shown there. The artist creates them in his home studio in Rehovot, which also serves as a protected room.
