In a veiled reference to Kamenskikh: Zhadan spoke out sharply against artists who criticize Ukraine
Ukrainian writer and musician Serhiy Zhadan commented on the behavior of artists who have moved abroad and feel free to criticize our country from there. The conversation was prompted by recent statements by Potap and Nastya Kamenskykh regarding the Ukrainian language.
According to Zhadan, he primarily follows Ukrainian artists who remain in the country, serve in the Armed Forces, or assist the military. In the context of the discussion about Potap and Kamenskykh, the writer stated that he does not understand why performers who are abroad and criticize Ukraine continue to be called Ukrainian artists.
“I honestly don’t understand at all why they’re considered Ukrainian artists. That’s a question for those who gave them titles, who supported them, who included them in government-affiliated pools so they could perform at all the official events. I don’t think the Ukrainian music scene will lose much without their presence,” Zhadan said.
The writer also spoke about the role of culture during a full-scale war. According to him, today’s conflict involves not only the military but all of Ukrainian society. Zhadan emphasized that many cultural figures are currently serving or have previously served in the Armed Forces. At the same time, he cited the ability to bear witness to events in Ukraine—and thereby be part of the resistance—as an important function of artists.
“Many members of the cultural community are currently serving or have served in the Defense Forces, taking direct, active part. But it seems to me that there is one more thing—it is also very important and should not be underestimated—and that is the ability to bear witness, as a way to be part of the resistance, to be part of this confrontation, and to be part of this struggle,” the writer explained.
