To keep its thermal power plants running in winter, Centrenergo needs up to 400,000 tons of coal per month — Shmyhal
The state-owned company Centrenergo’s coal demand during the heating season could range from 250,000 to 400,000 tons per month if thermal power plants operate at full capacity.
This was announced by Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal.
According to him, the government has already begun preparations to build fuel reserves and coordinate the work of the state energy sector ahead of winter.
The Cabinet of Ministers stated that one of the priorities will be the use of state-owned coal at state-owned thermal power plants.
“This is necessary to strengthen the country’s energy resilience, support Ukrainian miners, and preserve over 8,000 jobs,” Shmyhal noted.
The government also plans to develop mechanisms for the stable and uninterrupted supply of state-mined coal to meet thermal power generation needs during the fall and winter.
Preparations for winter were discussed during a meeting attended by representatives of the State Property Fund, the management of Centrenergo, Ukrvuhillya, and state-owned mines.
Separately, the parties considered issues of logistics, resource balance, and long-term cooperation between state-owned energy companies.
The government emphasized that cooperation among market participants must remain economically sound and adhere to market principles.
Power outages have been reported in the Sumy region due to Russian military aggression. On the morning of Tuesday, May 26, part of the region was left without electricity. Energy workers are working to restore power, and the causes and extent of the damage are being determined.
