Three first-stage units commissioned at Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Plant in China
All three generating units of the first stage have been commissioned at the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Plant on the Dadu River in China’s Sichuan Province. ECNS reports, citing China Energy Investment Corporation.
A 315-meter-high dam
The plant is located in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in southwestern China. Its dam is 315 meters high. According to the publication, it is currently the tallest in the world.
The hydropower plant has a total installed capacity of 2 million kilowatts. The project provides for four hydroelectric units with Francis turbines, each with a capacity of 500,000 kilowatts. The reservoir capacity is estimated at 2.9 billion cubic meters.

Electricity generation
The plant’s first unit began operating in June. Over two months, the facility commissioned three units to meet peak summer electricity demand in the Sichuan-Chongqing economic region.
Since its launch, the plant has supplied 500 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity. Once all four units are commissioned, expected annual generation will total about 7.7 billion kilowatt-hours. The plant is also expected to increase electricity generation at downstream hydropower plants by 6.6 billion kilowatt-hours.
