Moldovan government approves acceleration of Trump Liberty Line power transmission project — Balkan Insight

The Moldovan government has approved a draft law recognizing the construction of a new high-voltage power transmission line to Romania as a project of national public importance. This is expected to speed up land registration and other procedures needed to implement the project, Balkan Insight reports.

A 190-kilometre line

The 400-kilovolt power transmission line will be approximately 190 kilometres long. Around 70 kilometres will run through Moldova, while another 120 kilometres will run through Romania. According to Moldovan officials, the new connection is intended to strengthen the country’s integration with the Romanian and broader European electricity market.

Construction is supported by a $130 million US investment. The project is planned to be completed in 2032.

Named after the US president

The US Embassy in Chisinau said on Monday that the planned line will be called the Trump Liberty Line. The name is linked to the United States’ support for the project.

Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said during a government meeting that the project is important for the country’s energy security and thanked the US side for its support. Moldova is heavily dependent on electricity imports from Romania and Ukraine. Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent years have repeatedly disrupted regional electricity supplies, exposing Moldova’s vulnerability to outages.

According to the publication, there has been no significant criticism of the future line’s name either in Moldova or Romania, with the main focus on its importance for energy security.
