Video: A gas surplus has formed in Ukraine due to a drop in demand

A surplus has emerged in the Ukrainian gas market due to a sharp decline in consumption by industrial enterprises. The surplus has developed in the commercial segment of the market.

This was stated by Mykhailo Svyzho, a gas industry expert at the analytical firm ExPro.

According to him, on average over the summer, gas consumption was 20% lower than last year, and in August the drop reached 23%—the largest decline in a year.

“As we’ve already mentioned—especially in the video where we discussed the plans— the plans at the time to launch gas exports, we noted that due to the impact on large industrial consumers and the port infrastructure, a surplus of gas emerged in the commercial segment, that is, we ended up with a certain surplus of gas because consumption by large consumers had decreased,” explained Svyshcho.

It was precisely this surplus that was one of the topics of discussion regarding the controlled opening of exports. At the same time, exports were never launched, so the resource surplus remained within the Ukrainian market.

“Exports were never opened, so our consumption remains low, and accordingly, we have this certain surplus of gas,” the analyst noted.

As a reminder, after the Turkish lira fell to a new all-time low against the dollar on September 18, the country’s most popular money market fund declared default.

For the first time in 20 years, the Turkish lira became cheaper than the Ukrainian hryvnia.

Meanwhile, Şimşek called Turkey’s inflation target for 2027 realistic.
