John McAfee named Bitcoin’s creator shortly before his death

Shortly before his death in 2021, John McAfee, the renowned programmer and founder of the cybersecurity company McAfee, claimed to have revealed the true identity of Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. His main argument was based on the British spelling found in the Bitcoin white paper and the unusual style of placing exactly two spaces after each full stop—a rarity even in 2008.

McAfee accused Adam Back—a British cryptographer and creator of the Hashcash system, which is directly mentioned in the Bitcoin white paper as a “previous work by another person.” Adam Back’s scientific papers from the early 2000s also feature British English and the distinctive double-space usage after full stops.

This linguistic and stylistic analysis formed the foundation of McAfee’s claim that Back is Satoshi Nakamoto. However, this theory remains debated within the cryptographic and Bitcoin enthusiast communities.

McAfee is a leading cybersecurity firm founded by John McAfee in 1987, well-known for its antivirus software development and active involvement in digital technology advancement.

McAfee’s revelation added a new layer of intrigue to the long-standing mystery surrounding the enigmatic Satoshi Nakamoto. Despite McAfee’s confidence, the true identity of Bitcoin’s founder remains unconfirmed.

Further research and analytical efforts to uncover Satoshi’s identity may provide deeper insights into the origins and evolution of the cryptocurrency, one of the most important innovations of the 21st century.
